Electrical Heating Tips - Operating Tips for Efficiency & Comfort
Location! Location Location!
Do not locate your thermostat:
- on an outside wall
- a wall exposed to direct sunlight
- too near heat sources such as TV sets, table lamps, warm air registers etc.
- near windows, doors or where air circulation is poor (i.e. behind a door)
A thermostat is designed to respond to the temperature of the wall and the air around it.
Suggested Temperature Settings
Although the temperature of your home is a personal preference; here are some suggestions on using energy wisely.
- 21 C (70 F) when relaxing
- 20 C (68 F) when working or exercising
- 18 C (64 F) when sleeping
- 16 C (61 F) when no-one is home
Turning Off A Thermostat In Unoccupied Rooms
Although thermostats can be set lower in unoccupied rooms, heaters should not be turned completely off or set too low, especially in very cold weather. Doing so will only cause adjacent heated rooms to be cool and uncomfortable and make the heaters work harder using more energy. During extreme cold weather unoccupied rooms should be set between 13C-15C to prevent the "cold wall effect", avoid condensation, mold and mildew.
Programmable Thermostats Can Save Money
Up to 5% on your annual heating bill! Simply program the temperature lower when no-one is home or when everyone is asleep. Insulating your home, adding caulking and weather-stripping around doors and windows and making sure windows fit properly can also produce big savings and improve your family's comfort.
